Exam times for kids are stressful, not just for the kids but more for the moms !!!
I remember my mom used to be ready with a bowl of homemade curds mixed with sugar while I was getting ready to leave the home for any of my exams.
I used to wonder why curds with sugar was so important, but never refused it as it used to part of the Prasad offered to the goddess Saraswati. Mum is very religious, so I would just gulp the yummy curds and scoot off.
But that need to know WHY behind any ritual / act had to be satisfied.
And guess what, I got hold of that real reason just this morning when I was forwarded an article on foods for brain by my SIL.
I am copy pasting the portion that is mentioned in the book “Eat this, Not that “ by David ZincZenko !!!!! The unbolded paragraph is an extract for the above mentioned book.
It clearly solves the curiosity as to why curds is so important just before doing anything stressful or important!
CURDS CALMS us down !!!!
Nuts also have the similar calming effect, to be consumed before any stressful activity !
Thanks MOM, now I know why all the MOMs do just the right thing, knowingly or not.
TO CALM DOWN
Eat This!: LOW-FAT YOGURT OR MIXED NUTS
Scientists in Slovakia gave people 3 grams each of two amino acids—lysine and arginine—or a placebo, and asked them to deliver a speech. Blood measurements of stress hormones revealed that the amino acid-fortified guys were half as anxious during and after the speech as those who took the placebo. Yogurt is one of the best food sources of lysine; nuts pack loads of arginine.

Airtel advertisement made me realize something very profound.
I was talking to a friend who lives in Delhi. My sons were playing around me when my younger son heard me mention delhi while I was conversing.
After a while my son wanted to talk to my friend urgently. He took the phone and after a general talk I heard him say … “Bring an orange phone” !!!
“no not red only orange color phone..”
“ok bye..”
Now my friend was quite amused with a very specific request of item being asked by a 4 yr old. But I told him definitely orange was not his favorite color, it was red that he preferred. And never has he shown any keen interest of phones. He is a die hard 4 wheel lover !!!
And that’s when it clicked to me….!!!
The new Airtel advertisement. Yes that was it!
The ad showed a small kid of my son’s age being reprimanded by his mom for being naughty. She had scolded him and not allowed him to play outside with other kids. The kid then sneaks out of the home with something in his hands and goes up on a terrace. He finds a secured place and sits down to reveal an “orange phone ” . He picks up the phone and say ” Papa aap dilli gaye, Mumma ne mujhe daanta. Aap Mumma ko daantna ” . Then he rushed back to his chair where he was asked to chill out by his mom.
His mom comes up and says ” Doodh pe ke baahar khelne ja sakte ho ”
He asks his mom ” Papa ka phone aaya tha ?”
And the mom just smiles…
The kid thinks for sure that his dad had called back and scolded his mom and asked him to send him to play
So there was the clue that we needed… for my son’s special and specific request for “an orange phone” …
Btw he is still waiting … for his “Orange Phone “

A critic’s critic is what I can be best described as
I have very high set of standards when it comes to kids, education, hygiene and anything to do with the tiny tots.
Since my younger son was happily going to a kindergarten school “Kider Brook” at Kalyani Nagar, I was a carefree mom with no tension of homework, timing was cool 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. Next to my home a lane far to be precise
.
SO when he completed his nursery and was time for Jr Kg, I was not gonna repeat the mistake of hanging on to a kindergarten , which I did for my elder son. Read my blog on St Mary’s for more.
So come november 2008 and I started checking the DPS website for the form to be downloaded for admissions.www.dpspune.com . I was glad to find it in the second week of the month. Downloaded the form and took the print-outs. It was a pleasure to the eyes and mind to see very clear, no nonsense form with only required information that was asked for to be filled in.
There were only two things that were needed to be arranged for the registration time. Two passport size photographs of the child and a xerox copy of the birth certificate. How cool !
Then there was a week for the registration to be done. Again there was a very good system of handing token numbers to the parents when they entered the school. This made sure that first come first serve worked well and fair. The registration itself was a quick process with submission and checking of the form for the date of birth.
A total amount of Rs 1200/- was the dent during the registration. A small bag was handed to each parent which contained the school brochure and a form which contained the admission card for next round of meet with the principal. A very interestingletter from the principal looked like the icing on the cake, which mentioned very clearly that there was no need to coach andcoax the child for any type of exam. I was relieved.
The interview of the parents was preceeded with each child having an informal chat with two teachers. They were very friendly and asked my son a few shapes, names of fruits, colors , alphabets. Then they checked his motor actitvity too by making him pile up a stack of colorful rings.
The meeting with the principal was quite interesting too, as there was no formal question answer round. Since my husband recognized her as one of the teachers from DPS RK Puram, New Delhi, they chatted up while I was busy trying to keep my son from pulling the gold fish out of the bowl
!!!
SO that was that. Next we were told to check their website for the admission results, against the registration number.
There was a medical check up of all kids before the fee was to be paid.
They then called us the next day to pay the fee, which is a BIG BOMB. Rs 55000/- !! Of which only Rs 5000/- is refundable
The bus fee is seperate which is also collected at the same time. Rs 800/- month !
Right in the same room was the shopowner of the stationary and dress etc supplied to DPS.
We had to pay another Rs 5000/- for the same.
On the scheduled date we went to the shop on the lane opposite to the school. There was a huge rush and chaos. Lots of stuff to be collected. School bag, Books, Stationary, Craft items, Napkins and mats, uniform of three sets and a pair of shoes n socks. Phew !!!!
I am still waiting for the right size of the shoes.
On the orientation day which was a sunday we got a little surprised n bored with the songs and dance and speeches. Although the speech by the principal and the COO was very interesting and insightful.
We were later taken to the classroom which will be our son’s classroom for next one year.
There were teachers handing over bags of id cards and school rule book. The class was divided in to groups. The first group were to send their kids on a friday and the second on thursday, for the teachers to handle them easily. So we went to drop my son at 11:00 am though the school timing is 9:30 am to 2:30pm.
We were told to leave the class and pick up the kids at the pre requested bus stop. Each kid is given an id card which is to be worn by the kid all the time in the school. There is a duplicate of the same card which is to be shown to the attendant of the bus. Only in the presence of the card the child is handed over to the parent. In case the card is not there, the child is taken back to the school!
In all I have never seen a better organized school like DPS. I am in awe with their efficiency and discipline.
The only problem is the bus to our area is a bit over crowded ! But I am sure that too will be taken care of once the
management is made aware of this minor problem.
Yesterday there was a planned bomb drill at the school. The children were told not to tell their parents as they get panicked and start calling even when its not needed.I think this must be the brainchild of the Colonel who is handling the day to day operations with military like precision. Thank you Sir for the thought and actions. And hope other schools learn from this benchmark too.

My elder son is only 5.5 yrs and is such a cleanliness freak that I wonder why did I ever have to tell him about washing up !
Yesterday I gave him a glass of chilled orange tang. He looked inside the glass, only to find a small red ant floating in the juice. He promptly showed to me the ant in his juice. I dipped a finger and took the ant out, then gave back the glass to him.
He again looked inside the glass but returned it back saying that the juice was dirty now. I knew this would happen so was prepared for the same. So I told him that the ant is very tiny and now its out of his glass, so he can drink it off.
But my son being my son, refused to digest this simple act that removal of the ant out of the glass meant his juice was now clean enough. He had his reason too. He told me what I normally tell my kids once they are back from outside in the home. He said ” Mamma ! this ant must have been walking out side without any shoes. So when it came and got into my juice glass, all the dirt from its legs have washed into the juice ! So all the juice is now dirty too!!!!!”
Needless to say , I had no answer but to make another fresh glass of juice for him

My babies made my day yesterday. I normally have to sit one hour for each meal with both the kiddos every day. There are days when I am sitting patiently, telling them stories or they telling me stories. There are days when I am screaming like a witch at them, especially when there is vegetarian food on the menu.
My kids think food means chicken, mutton, fish, prawns or eggs. Paneer is also acceptable by the young HHs. The days I make veggies only, I have to make sure I have no meeting lined up, no workshop to attend or take and definitely no calls. I am shouting screaming threatening for an hour ! At the end I do manage to make them eat what I wish but at the cost of their lov for me and my guilt towards them !
But today was different.
My friend Arun, forwarded a mail to me. I had tears in my eyes watching a kid eat from the garbage ! There was another picture of a kid drinking water along with a dog from the same puddle !
I thought of making a positive impact and use of this mail by telling a story . So once we were back from school, my kids one 5 yr old another 3.5 yr were too eager to hear and see the picture of the boy who did not eat food ! And the kid who threw food and wasted water.
After watching the powerpoint presentation, I could see my kids watching seriously, with their expression changing. They felt sad and my elder one was convinced that no one should throw food or water, and that he will not trouble his mom any longer. I don’t know how long it will last.
At the dinner time, I was hoping to see the effect of the mail on my kids eating habit and change .
My elder son ate his food with one coaxing. I was mighty pleased and glad that the expectant result was seen.
But I was not prepared for the effect on my younger kid !
He ate a bite and threw away the whole food into the dustbin ! Shocked and angry, I was upset that my younger son was so not sensitive ! Anyways, I had to question him and make him understand the effect of bad deed done by him. So I called him and made him sit with me. We call this type of sessions as “Talk Time”, where they have to talk out their problems and anything in their minds, without me judging them!
So I asked him the reason for his throwing away the food into the garbage bin! He answered, ” Mumma ! I threw away all the food, so that the boy gets more food to eat when he looks into the garbage again ! “

Feb 24, 2008
I am a very proud and free mom today..Why? ‘Cause finally my elder son got through the St Mary’s School in Upper KG ! I should have hunted for schools and admission when he was to go to LKG.
On the day of his written test (imagine that for a 4.5 yr old) and an oral test, I was quite sure he will do well as he is a brilliant learner!
U know, he likes to learn about everything and anything! Such intelligent questions?
One question in the interview was what objects do u use in a rainy day?
He told me all that he cud think of including umbrella, raincoat, gumboots….and then he added ..” teacher u can use newspaper also if you don’t have anything else !”
I knew I don’t have to worry.
So on the parents’ interview day , my hubby and I waited for one hour for our turn with butterflies in my tummy!…
Mrs. Mathew, the director of St Mary’s was smiling and looking through her spectacles. She asked me, “So you are Shourya’s Parents?” And we replied “Yes”. Not forgetting any of our etiquettes, we pulled the chair to sit down.
Mrs. Mathew who was beaming said with a lovely smile ….” Oh your son has done very well, he is brilliant child!
Then she asked where my younger son goes. I told her as of now a playschool called Kidder Brook, but will be here after one year to join his brother in St Mary’s.
Hoping to see any change in expression or an answer to counter my far fetched thoughts, I looked into her eyes. (I have this habit of looking straight into person’s eyes so deep that I am able to read even the pictures the brain is forming!) She just smiled. And we waited for a few minutes more, but no questions! So I finally asked her if we cud leave.
She told us yes!
And then after a week we logged into the school site to check if he is selected.
Hurrrrrraaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh!
He’s done it!
We have done it pals!
And guess what the fee including admission fee is only Rs 8800/- for 6 months.
From all that Rs 50000 to Rs 90000 admission fee, to Rs 2000–Rs 5000 monthly tuition fee, the fee here seemed to relaxing!

Admission time in Pune is harrowing experience for all parents trying to select a school for their kid. I made the blunder of not taking admissions for my kid in Jr kg = nursery.
So when Nov 2007 arrived, I was all geared to get my kid admitted into DPS(Delhi Public School), Pune. Co-ed and CBSE is followed there. Having done the same board made sense. The website www.dpspune.com did not display any information till the first week of November 2007. Then the website mentioned that admissions for all classes except above 1st STD were open.
The forms were available in the office of DPS School, in NIBM road. When I went there sharp at 10:00 am, there was chaos and crowd. I was handed a token numbered 125. The attendant at the gate added to the confusion by telling us that those who have not got the birth certificate will not be given forms. I was furious as it was not mentioned in their site. SO I made my way upto the lady giving away the admission forms. She clarified the confusion and said that only for parents who were submitting the form right there, had to produce all required documents.
I was thankful and left. After waiting for 3 hours, when my turn came, I was told that this year there were no admissions open for prep class. I felt like pulling her hair off, but faked a smile. When I asked her why they had not bothered to mention that information on their website, she said ‘oh I am not aware!’
I filled a small strip of paper saying that I was interested in prep class for my kid, but to date no one has called me yet. Their admission fee in Rs 50000/- non refundable. And monthly tuition fee is Rs 2800/- . The Bus fee is Rs700 which is compulsory.
www.dpspune.com.
The next school I went into was Vibgyor High, on NIBM Road again. This school was right next to a residential complex which was still under construction. The other side of the school has Country club coming up. Hence the small premises of the school definitely will remain small due to lack of expansion land. The play area out of school is quite small and non impressive.
The school classes were quite impressive, with colorful walls, furnitures and decorations done by teachers and students. I was impressed by the coordinator and the teachers. They were dynamic and had beautiful english accent. The school was well organized and categorized. Kids upto upper kg are given snacks by the school. I loved the teaching methodology too which was very practical. They follow IB international board and then kids have an option to switch to ICSE in 7th STD, but the fee was humungous.
Non refundable admission fee of Rs15000/- The tuition fee was Rs 7000/- month for first term made of 3 months. The bus fee was also huge. Rs1000/- month. The timing too did not justify the fee. For Kg classes it was 9.00 am to 1.00 pm. If they could reduce the fee structure or increase the duration of stay , then the fee taken made sense. The fee varies for next terms. And they charge Rs 2166/month rest of quarters. I guess, the money is made in the first quarter by the school to cover up for the losses due to kids leaving school once they get admissions elsewhere.
www.vibgyorhigh.com.
The next school I went to was
Bishops School, Undhri. Thankfully they had mentioned clearly that there were no admissions for upper kg this year in Kalyani Nagar or Camp branches. Only Undhri branch had admissions open for all classes upto Xth. But again the school teachers were not very impressive. The school was more strict than welcoming. Again the admission form is filled and accepted online only. This avoids all chaos. The form is available in the month of Nov first week onwards. You get a code online again, which has to be produced in while filling registration form. Based on the criteria Bishops school calls kids for interview and within the month of dec all admission process is done. I have no clue of the fee structure. They follow ICSE board. The timing is ok too
www.thebishopschool.org
The next school I went to was Lexicon international school at wagholi. The school has lovely green landscaped premises. I was at peace to see the cool n calm serene atmosphere. And pleasantly surprised to see 3-4 kids sitting under the tree with a teacher, studying or playing. But all my calmness dashed to the ground when I entered the principal’s office. The office was a shabby four walled room with a dirty table and a few chairs. I was very saddened to feel the managements approach towards the principal. The principal too was quite non dynamic and unimpressive. So were the teachers. Their pronunciations were horrible. One of the teacher remarked that their students know more in computers than the teachers! She did the worst damage to her school.
The fee was not exorbitant. The admission fee of Rs 15000/- non refundable and Rs 3100/month was the tuition fee. The bus fee was Rs 700/-. They follow IB and planning to start ICSE too.
www.lexicon.co.in
The other school I went was Sharad Pawar International School, at Lohegaon. This was a breathtaking experience for eyes and mind and all the senses. The structure is as grand as Rashtrapati Bhavan! The school is a perfect school in all angles.
The timing for the kids is a perfect 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. Breakfast and lunch is provided by the school. The school has indoor badminton to all sports you can think of.
There is a dramatic theater handled by the actress of old time, Ranjeeta. Remember the song “sun saiba sun… ” The classes are huge. The playground is never ending. The teachers are international. But it has International board only.
The fee is again breathtaking. The non refundable fee is same as in DPS, i.e. Rs 50000/-, But they take a refundable fee of Rs 90000/- as security deposit. The tuition fee is easy uptill kg. Rs 3800/- Bus fee Rs1500/- They follow IB board only.
www.internationalschool.in
Also they are open for admission all round the year.
The last school I have tried and finally managed to apply for the admissions is St Mary’s school. They are all boys and all girls separately. The Boys start early at 7.00 am and girls at 9.00 am. The School is near camp and is beautifully located like a perfect our time schools. They have huge playground and lots of greenery. The school follows ICSE board. The admission is last amongst all other city schools.
In the month of January third week, they have online admission forms. You get a token online and you have to register after a week in the school office. Then they display short listed kids online. These kids and parents have to go thru aptitude test and interview respectively. The school takes Rs 1000/- non refundable admission fee. The tuition fee is Rs 1000/month. www.stmarysschoolpune.org

I am writing this as I want every parent who in interested in admitting their child to Kangaroo Kids Pune(kk) at Koregaon Park to know about the facts.
I am totally in a shock !
Today I had to drop my son to Nehru Memorial hall for the concert practice at 9.00am. My son cried a little as he does not like new and strange places. I was given a card by the management ,saying that without that card I cannot pick up my son. The pick up time was written as 12.30pm. I reach there at 12.25pm. I am shocked to see my poor son standing all ALONE at the entrance gate of the Hall !!!
I was very upset and angry that a school of this stature where all hoity toities kids go, has no one to take care and wait with my 2.8 year old son!!! There were cars whizzing in front as the main door opens right into the main road called Camp area of Pune! There were men strolling around, beggars walking past him! Any one could have taken him away in 5 sec!!
I waited there for 5 min which was like ages to see if someone will come. Then a teacher comes out and seeing me standing with him brings his bag. No word or even a thought to the fact that he was all alone. I asked her why there was nobody with him? And the answer was blank, and then another teacher comes by, who cooks up an excuse that there must have been miscommunication.
I was livid and shaking out of shock and anger and irresponsibility of the school. I felt betrayed! I was in tears to know that the child I take care and fuss about so much, was standing all alone in the middle of the busiest part of the city by the same school that I trusted and paid 3000 bucks every month! In that cost I cud keep him a full time educated nanny who would not only teach him but feed him and care for him.
Kangaroo Kids is well known as its Mumbai branches have actors n hi-fi ’s kids going there. But unfortunately the Pune branch has only cashed on the name. It does not care about the kids. They don’t own up their mistake ever. Several times kids are found sitting alone with no one around after school time!
A year back my son was bitten by ants at 14 places and the school refused to own up that there were ants in the premises. On the contrary they said that may be in my car I should check for ants. It’s the most irresponsible school I have ever encountered. They don’t have water back up and there were times when the toilet was full of poop. How infectious it is to send your kid to this kind of unhygienic school. Just last month my son picked up urinary infection from the school. I am so fed up and today was the last straw.
It’s been a full day now and neither the principal, owner nor even the class teacher has called to find out if my son is ok and how are we doing.
I am still shivering when I think of what if someone kidnapped him, or just took him away! World is full of maniacs, what if someone did something to him? What if he started to walk in the main street with the heavy traffic all around him? I just cannot get myself to forget this incident. Anyone who has any query u can email me here .
I am taking up this issue with the owner Lina Ashar. If they can pacify me fine, else I will be going to the newspaper and TV channels to let the poor parent be ware of Pune branch of kangaroo kids school. Don’t think your kids are in the safe hands there. Infact if u leave them there, you are at the worst risk of harming your child. Please everyone spread the word, about this damn school, b4 u let the silly teachers harm your kid!!! And don’t forget to make comments! I have taken admission in another school for my son today. Yesterday was the meeting with the people from KK head office Mumbai. They were very professional and knew what they were doing. To the extent that they lacked empathy. They first wanted to ”tackle” each parent separately. I was not interested in 1-1. AS there were all the parents waiting to be heard. We all went in and with the Pune management in tow. I started to explain all that I had gone thru, the carelessness of the management, the coldness from the management and all other problems. While the meeting was nearing end, I thought that since things were accepted by the management and were ready to take corrective actions, it was my moral duty to inform them that I have emailed to hundreds of people. So they should not be surprised if someone gave the mail for print. The moment I said print , they both panicked. Instead of realizing that when I wrote the mail, by then it was more than 2 days and no one had contacted me from the school. I had out of frustration made it my agenda to write to every one I knew to circulate the mail. As I wanted to create awareness about the incident that had happened and then beware of the school. Then the principal mentioned that there was someone who was found distributing pamphlets against KK. But instead of understanding my condition and frustration, the female rep from KK, indirectly threatens me saying that anyone who maligns the name of KK will have to face their lawyer. Not once but at least 3 times she repeated that. The male rep had his wits together and was trying to take care of the situation. While leaving the female rep mentioned another comment against me. She said that” the way Vaundhara whose son had pushed a bead in his nose, handled the situation very nicely as compared to me” . I was again very shocked, but by this time I realized it was no use talking to the management reps, for whom one child’s case was important as his mom was very well connected politically than a child who’s mom chose to approach the management directly with no backing politically. Also she thought that in the times of crisis like I was facing, I should have sat down to analyze and strategies how I should approach the management. So now my dear readers, u have to decide if I should let them go as they threatened me (ha-ha) or I should now give a go ahead to the 2 reporters who are waiting to go live with the story. In either case I will need your support. As this is not my fight it is a step towards making our children safer, and these school take better actions.

The school initially denied the incident and when I had posted on a blog. Later the management came back and apologised.

DPS school, its management and the staff never stops to amaze me !
The DPS bus which comes to Kalyani Nagar to pick and drop my child would stop at a very filthy place. At the garbage dump, right after the bridge ended . It was not just filthy but was a nuisance to be standing amongst ragpickers, truck drivers and scrap collection shop. My kid started only this year, so I was trying to bear untill the rains started this june 2009. It became a nightmare to stand in the rains, with cars splashing water, flies tickling and men staring at buffons like us waiting !
That’s when I decided, no more bearing this unwanted trauma everyday in the scorching sun or pouring rains.
I spoke to a few parents if they wanted to get the bus stand shifted to somewhere decent place. Everyone obviously nodded. SO I went to the school and spoke to the office lady, who asked me to get a letter from all the parents who wanted the same. Then my hubby darling spoke to the transport head too. He said if there was a good number of students from my society, they will defintely consider the change.
SO I again made a letter describing the situation, took names of all the kids who would come to the bus stop and gave it to the principal. I also showed the management pictures of the area in the rains with the garbage.
The principal without a single word approved the change of the stop from the shabby place to my society Lunkad Sky Lounge. Now that’s what I call quick decision and appreciate the DPS school even more.
What a SCHOOL you have madamjee ! Hats off !

The class teacher will be pleased to have extra time at hand as she need not repeat answers of the same queries by all the parents. The parents who are working and cannot make to pick their kids everyday also are pleased to have easy access to all information online.
Hope similar idea is taken up by other classes in all other schools.
